There are more coffee shops on Phangan than seem from the signs in central Sritthanu: their own specialty spots are in Hin Kong, Chalok Lam, and the forest near Thong Sala — just not written about in travel guides as often. Below are six places outside the main coffee quarter of the island, each with verified specialization: own roast, specific cuisine or work format, not generic "good atmosphere".
How we chose
We looked at two things: what the coffee shop offers besides espresso — a workspace, specific country's cuisine, loyalty program — and which part of the island it's in, so the list doesn't come down to one Sritthanu street. Opening hours and day off are listed where we could verify: some establishments on the island close for a day without notice on the door.
What suits whom
- Cafe Francesca in Sritthanu — for most: one of few coffee shops on the island open 7:30am to 11pm, has a gluten-free menu.
- Malka Café & Cultura near Chalok Lam — if you want more than just coffee: Turkish coffee with cardamom and Israeli-style bourekas, fast WiFi for work.
- Common Grounds Coffee in Wok Tume — own roasted coffee Doi Chaang from Chiang Rai and a pool in the yard; after the seventh cup — next one is free.
- Flow Cafe & Eatery on Had Salad — rare for the island: accepts Visa and Mastercard, has separate coworking area and smoothie bowls.
- The Worlds End Cafe in Chalok Lam — right across the state pier, best breakfast in the village by locals' reviews, Greek dishes on the menu.
- Balance Specialty Coffee northeast of Thong Sala — worth the special trip: coffee shop in the forest with hand roasting and Australian-style breakfasts, closed Mondays.
What to keep in mind
Almost everywhere on the island they accept cash or Thai QR transfer only — Flow Cafe with cards is the exception rather than the rule. Places outside Sritthanu and Hin Kong are further from residential areas: scooter ride can take 20–30 minutes each way. Some coffee shops close one day a week — check their social media before the trip, don't rely on a permanent schedule.
