Iraq is split in practice: northern cities such as Erbil and Sulaymaniyah receive visitors more easily than the centre and the south. Food and fuel are cheap, while international-standard housing and expatriate services are expensive. The climate is desert: a very hot summer, a short mild winter and snow in the northern mountains. Entry is arranged electronically and differs by region, movement is agreed in advance, and serious medical care stays abroad.
