South Africa is the best-equipped country on the continent: Cape Town with its mountain and ocean, Johannesburg with the jobs, wine country and safari a few hours away. Living costs far less than in Europe at a comparable level of private healthcare and schooling, while imports and electronics are expensive. The seasons are inverted: the Cape has a wet Mediterranean winter and dry hot summer, while the east gets its rain in summer. What you accept is everyday caution, power interruptions and distances that only a car can cover.
