Where to drink in Phangan

In Phangan, you choose a bar not by cocktail menu but by whether you'll catch the sunset: the island faces west half its coast, and this determines when to leave and which beach to go to. Below are seven places across different parts of the island, each verified beyond the catalog card: all have live pages, reviews, or a website, so the address isn't abandoned.

How we chose

First we separated sunset bars (western coast, program ends with sunset) from evening ones — those that stay open late and aren't tied to time of day. Then we checked specifics: what they serve, when they open, whether you need to climb a hill or take a boat. We didn't consider general words like "atmospheric place" as a criterion — that's not selection, that's its absence.

What suits whom

• Heaven Bar at Had Chao Phao beach, Sritthanu — for most: the island's main sunset bar since 1986, happy hour 5–7pm, grilled fish on the sand in the evening.
• Secret Beach (Had Sone) — second most popular sunset on the western shore, quieter and less crowded than Zen Beach, the bar sits on a cliff above the water.
• Tipsy Cocktail Bar in Sritthanu — if you've already seen the sunset: the only place in the area that stays open late and serves craft cocktails, not just beer.
• Rasta Baby in Thong Nai Pan — relaxed tree house bar with hammocks and reggae, open 10am to 2am, if you're on the northeast coast.

What to keep in mind

Sunset bars on the western coast fill up 30–40 minutes before sunset — arrive early, not right at sunset. Roads between island neighborhoods have no lights or markings, don't drive a scooter after dark while drinking. Some bars accept cash or Thai QR transfer only — you won't be able to pay by card everywhere.
