What to see in Nakhon Ratchasima

Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) is first and foremost a transit and regional hub, not a tourist destination, so there aren't many sights in the classic sense. This collection features what's worth seeing in a day or two: the city's main monument, royal temples and museums in the historic center. Apartment buildings and condominiums that the catalog mistakenly filed under this category aren't here.

How we selected them

We filtered out residential complexes and serviced apartments — there were more of them in the category than actual sights. We kept temples with royal status (Phra Aram Luang), museums, and the monument around which Korat's city identity is built.

What suits whom

Start with the Thao Suranaree Monument on Ratchadamnoen — the city's main symbol: the square by the monument is open at all times, and it's convenient to explore from there on foot.

Nearby, a couple of hundred meters away, — Wat Phra Narai Maharaj Woraviharn: the city's main Buddhist temple with royal status. Wat Bueng and Wat Sa Kae — two more temples with the same status, in different parts of the Old City, if you want to see more than one.

For history and context — Maha Weerawong National Museum on Ratchadamnoen and Korat Museum by Rajabhat University: exhibits about the province and city.

Rueankorat Chalermwattana — a house-museum in traditional Isan style, if you're interested in architecture rather than just temples.

Korat Contemporary Art and Culture Center on Suranaree — a small contemporary art center, an option for a short stop between tasks.

What to keep in mind

In temples — covered shoulders and knees, no exceptions for foreigners. Most places have free admission or a symbolic fee, but museums can have a day off during the week — check ahead if you're visiting specifically for an exhibit.
