In Ayutthaya there is one large public hospital and several private ones — differences in price, appointment speed, and English-speaking staff. If life is in danger, call 1669 (emergency ambulance throughout Thailand) in any case, don't choose from a list. ## How we chose We divided by type: a public hospital with full profile and 24-hour emergency, private hospitals with coordinators for foreigners, and a specialized center — if you need not emergency care, but specific treatment. ## What suits whom - **Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Hospital** on U-Thong Road — the largest and best-equipped in the province, public. Emergency operates 24/7, there are separate coordinators for foreign patients. Emergency phone +66-35-211-888, nationwide — 1669. - **Ratchathani Hospital** in the city — private multispecialty, without state system queues, usually faster by appointment. - **Ratchathani Rojana Hospital** in Bangsaen district — a branch of the same chain, seven floors, about a hundred beds, modern equipment; closer if you live in the Rojana industrial zone rather than the historic center. - **ASIA International Hospital** in Bangsaen — modern private clinic with walk-in appointments, focused on emergency trauma and first aid. - **Pirawech Hospital** — private, with a high share of positive patient reviews; an option if you need a scheduled appointment, not an ambulance. - **Ratchathani Radiotherapy Center** — specialized radiotherapy department, participates in a free treatment program under social insurance for policy holders. ## What to keep in mind At the state hospital, admission for uninsured foreigners is paid and often takes longer, but is cheaper than private. Private hospitals in Thailand almost always ask for a deposit or payment confirmation before starting treatment, except for life-threatening cases. Keep the 1669 number and the nearest hospital address in Thai handy — this speeds up the conversation with dispatch and the taxi driver.
Which Temples and Shrines to See in Ayutthaya
Besides the Buddha's head in the roots of a fig tree at Wat Mahathat — the most recognizable symbol of Ayutthaya — it's worth seeing active temples where locals still go to pray, Thailand's oldest Catholic church, and the mosque of the Hua Ro quarter: the city was a multicultural capital of traders from Persia, India, China, and Europe long before it became an open-air museum. ## How we chose We mixed the main ruin of the historical park with active places: sites open for prayer, not just for viewing, require different clothing and behavior, and it's worth knowing this in advance. ## What suits whom - **Wat Mahathat** — a stone Buddha's head overgrown with fig tree roots: the most recognizable image of Ayutthaya and the first stop for those on a one-day visit. Entry with the historical park ticket. - **Wat Thammikarat** — an active monastery on U-Thong Road: a ruined stupa surrounded by 52 guardian lion statues in Khmer style — rare for Thai temples. Free entry. - **Wat Suwandararam Ratchaworawihan** — "the temple of the golden star": an active monastery with early 20th-century frescoes, scenes of King Naresuan's battle with the Burmese. Dress modestly, free entry. - **Wat Suwannawas** — restored ruins at the corner of Chikun Road and U-Thong Road, near Maharaj Bridge: during excavations, a Ming-style Buddha statue was found here, now in the Chao Sam Phraya Museum. - **St. Joseph's Church** — Thailand's first Catholic church, founded in 1666 by French missionaries under King Narai; the current building in Romanesque style was built in 1891. In Ayutthaya, a cafe is not just a place to drink coffee: old Thai houses on stilts are converted into establishments with river views, one keeps reptiles and cats, and hidden near Wat Mahathat are places without English signs. We've collected those worth seeking out intentionally, not just walking into the first air-conditioned place that comes along. ## How we chose We kept places with a memorable concept — architecture, theme, or location — rather than any coffee shop with WiFi. We checked opening hours and what made each place different from its neighbors. ## What suits whom - **Little Leaf Cafe** — a tiny cafe on Naresuan Road among market stalls: a European courtyard, air conditioning, good latte and matcha. No restroom, but quiet. - **Raw Nan** opposite Wat Mahathat — no English sign, entrance through an alley on the left, no parking. An option if you want to sit right after temple viewing without leaving the area. - **La Loubiere Cafe & Restaurant** — an old Thai house on stilts with a glass extension by the river; coconut cake and slow breakfasts, more often filmed for Instagram than eaten. - **Preedee Cafe** on U-Thong waterfront — affordable, strong coffee, tables by the water, calm even on weekends. - **Earthling Craft — Coffee & Bar** — coffee shop by day, craft beer and pizza bar by night; in separate zones they keep reptiles and cats. Open 9:00 to midnight. - **Homeboy Cafe** on U-Thong Road — a small minimalist house with signature drinks (nitro cold brew, sparkling with honey and lemon); a hostel above the cafe. Few outlets, come to sit, not to work. - **Betterbloom Cafe & Shop** at Ayothaya Floating Market — coffee, garlic bread and desserts, they also sell clothes here. Closed Wednesdays, open until six in the evening on weekdays. ## What to keep in mind Little Leaf and Raw Nan have no separate English menu and often no spaces for laptop work — these are cafes to sit in, not to work. Earthling Craft has music in the evening and gets crowds: if you need quiet, better come during the day.
